There is a debate currently going on with the media and some Chief Constables Read more.. about whether the PCC can influence the operational role of Chief Constables.
Clearly the Dorset PCC will work strategically with the Chief Constable and the Police and Crime Panel (PCP)
On operational intervention, let me make my position clear. I represent the public. If the public overwhelmingly give me direction on “Op Protect”, the “No Excuse” campaign or the role of the Police Helicopter, of course I will seek to make that happen.
My job is to work in partnership with the Chief Constable and the Police and Crime Panel (PCP) to effect the wishes of the people of Dorset.
If I am elected, I will only step into operational areas, if I have a public mandate.
Even then, I will be intervening on “making things happen” in a certain police strategic area. I am not there to tell the Chief Constable which street to put a police officer on. But I am there to share a policing concern the public want action on.
This mandate will come from my election pledges or from future public surveys, or public contact direct to me.
Therefore, for this election, some of my pledges will relate to the policy surrounding some operational issues.
